Abstract
Water scarcity and contamination are critical global challenges, particularly in developing and rural regions. This study presents the design, development, and performance evaluation of a solar still integrated with an Internet of Things (IoT)-based monitoring system. The proposed system utilizes solar energy for water distillation and employs an ESP8266 microcontroller to monitor parameters such as temperature and water level in real time. Experimental analysis was conducted over five consecutive days under varying climatic conditions. The results indicate that water productivity is strongly influenced by solar radiation and ambient temperature, with peak output observed during maximum sunshine hours. The integration of IoT enhances system efficiency, reliability, and remote accessibility. The proposed model offers a low-cost, eco-friendly, and scalable solution for decentralized water purification. In addition, the real-time monitoring capability enables continuous observation of the operating conditions of the solar still, allowing changes in temperature and water level to be tracked without requiring direct physical supervision. The collected data can support performance assessment and help identify variations in distillation efficiency under different environmental conditions. The system also reduces dependence on conventional energy sources by utilizing renewable solar energy, making it suitable for locations with limited access to electricity and centralized water treatment facilities. The compact design and relatively simple operating principle make the proposed system potentially applicable in rural communities, remote areas, and other water-stressed regions. Overall, the integration of solar distillation technology with IoT-based monitoring demonstrates the potential to improve water purification efficiency, operational monitoring, and accessibility while supporting sustainable and environmentally responsible water management.
