Abstract
The study evaluated the surface water quality of Okoroagu River, Niger Delta of Nigeria, in order to determine the water quality index. Water samples were collected at five sampling points of the Okoroagu river. The results revealed that the Physicochemical and heavy metals parameters exceeded the NSDWQ and WHO recommended permissible limits except for TDS, pH, EC, Zinc, Chromium, Nickel and Manganese whicht were within the acceptable limit. The water quality index scores of the selected locations of Okoroagu river was observed to be very poor and unfit for drinking. According to the results obtained, the waters of Umudike (SS C), Umuochogu (SS D) and Okpala (SS E) locations were observed to be even more polluted. The study recommends consistent monitoring of the river against anthropogenic activities and to allow for dredging operation around the surface of the river by relevant agencies.
