Abstract
Heterocyclic compounds have gained significant attention in thin film coatings due to their exceptional chemical versatility and functional properties. These compounds, characterized by the presence of heteroatoms in their ring structures, play a crucial role in enhancing the anticorrosion and antimicrobial performance of protective coatings. This review explores the recent advancements in the application of heterocyclic compounds for corrosion resistance and microbial inhibition, emphasizing their mechanisms of action, effectiveness, and potential for sustainable industrial applications. The incorporation of heterocyclic-based coatings has demonstrated improved adhesion, barrier properties, and durability in harsh environments, making them promising candidates for protecting metal surfaces from degradation. Additionally, their inherent antimicrobial properties contribute to preventing biofilm formation, which is critical in medical, marine, and food-related industries. Future research directions, including green synthesis approaches and multifunctional coatings, are also discussed to further improve the efficiency and environmental sustainability of heterocyclic-based thin films.
Keywords: Heterocyclic compounds, thin film coatings, corrosion inhibition, antimicrobial coatings, self-healing coatings, metal protection, and biofilm prevention.
