Abstract

The construction and demolition (C&D) waste is among the largest streams of solid-waste in the world, which has posed significant environmental, economic, and resource utility issues. Common waste disposal techniques – such as landfill and low-grade recycling – contribute to destruction of the material and wasteful characteristics. Polymers as methods of stabilizing mixed C&D waste and converting it into a high-performance construction material have become one of the promising methods in recent years. The review digs into how C&D waste can be converted into useful building products using polymer binders, modified matrices and composite technologies. We pay attention to major polymer-composite solutions: thermoplastic and thermosetting composite systems, polymer–cement composite, fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite, and recycled polymer and aggregate much-recycled composite. The review describes the encapsulating property of the polymers in cases where the waste is contained, full of adhesion between interfaces, the stabilization of components of the polymers through chemical means and durability enhancement. It also promotes the new recycled, bio-based, and functionalized polymers in construction sustainability. The main challenges that we evaluate critically include the compatibility of materials, their long-term performance, capacity of scale up, and their environmental effects. This article provides a blueprint of future polymer composites using C&D waste by combining research trends integrating a polymer-chemistry lens. As demonstrated by the results, polymer-based solutions can be used to promote circular-economy objectives in construction as well as consider structural, durability, and sustainability factors.

Keywords: Construction and demolition waste, polymer chemistry, polymer composites, waste stabilization, polymer-modified construction materials, sustainable construction.
