Abstract

Aluminium alloys and polymers are the light-weight materials extensively used in structural, aero-space, automobile and marine applications. Al6061 alloy and nylon 6 were joined through the adhesive bond and their characteristics were analyzed. However, joining of these dissimilar materials for the evolution of hybrid engineering structures were complex because of their difference in physical, chemical and mechanical behaviours. The Taguchi’s, Design of Experiment were conducted on the various mixture of adhesives and surface treatments. The two adhesives, Araldite and MC-bond and the three surface treatments viz, mechanical, chemical and sand blasting methods were combined together for L18 orthogonal array, according to the Design of Experiment. The B2-M2 part number with MC bond, processed mechanically of bonding thickness, 0.5 mm and the corresponding tensile strength of 70.77 MPa revealed the ideal trial in Design of Experiment. The MC-bond adhesive was observed to be the efficient joint, possessed the highest means value of 60 when compared with other combinations, being trialed. The mechanical surface treatment was found to be superior in the achievement of required surface structure which have great means value of 60 than the sand blasting means value of 25 and chemical surface treatment means value of 30. The mechanical strength of joints were assessed which revealed about the domination of mechanical surface treated joints when compared with the other joints. The main aim of this work is to estimate and understand the performance of Al6061-nylon 6 joints under dynamic loads.
