Abstract

Polymer chemistry has emerged as a cornerstone of modern pharmaceutical technology, offering unprecedented control over drug formulation, delivery, and therapeutic performance. This review highlights the pivotal role of polymers—both synthetic and natural—in revolutionizing drug delivery systems across various routes, including oral, parenteral, transdermal, ocular, nasal, and pulmonary administration. Special emphasis is placed on the structural and functional versatility of polymers, which allows for tailored drug release profiles, enhanced bioavailability, and targeted therapy. Key polymerization techniques such as ring-opening polymerization, RAFT, and ATRP are discussed alongside critical polymer properties like biocompatibility, degradability, and solubility. Advanced polymer-based systems, including stimuli-responsive materials, polymeric nanocarriers (e.g., dendrimers, nanogels, polymersomes), and biopolymers like chitosan and alginate, are explored for their applications in precision medicine and sustainable drug development. The review also underscores the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in advancing smart delivery platforms and next-generation therapeutics. As the field moves towards personalization and environmentally conscious practices, polymer chemistry continues to offer transformative solutions for complex pharmaceutical challenges. This paper consolidates recent advancements and outlines future directions for innovation in drug delivery and pharmaceutical materials science.

Keywords: Biodegradable polymers, drug delivery systems, nanocarriers, personalized medicine, pharmaceutical technology, polymer chemistry, smart polymers, stimuli-responsive systems
