Abstract

Plastic pollution is one of the biggest environmental threats faced by human society, especially in cities like Gorakhpur, which have minimal resources for waste management but a very high amount of waste that keeps on increasing day by day. The purpose of this research is to determine the total amount of plastic waste (PW) generated in Gorakhpur city and forecast plastic waste generation. The snowball sampling method was used for collecting data. Various interviews and site visits were conducted to collect data on plastic waste. Then collected data was analysed and, assuming a linear increment of plastic waste generation in Gorakhpur, forecasting was done. After completing the calculation and analysis, the found result shows that approximately 74,25,086 kg of plastic waste was collected by Gorakhpur Nagar Nigam, and the total generated plastic waste in Gorakhpur is 99,08,222 kg, or 12.92 kg per capita in 2021. The rate of increase in the generation of plastic waste is 217g per capita per year and if things don’t change, then in the year 2030 plastic waste can reach up to 14.87 kg per capita in Gorakhpur. Also, assuming exponential growth and Holt’s damped trend (with a damped factor of 0.85), we get per capita plastic waste of 21.97 kg and 13.84 kg per capita in the year 2030, respectively. These results show the severity of the plastic waste management problem. Part of the problem is that much macro-scale research has been conducted on the national level in the past, but it can’t provide solutions to the local problems related to plastic waste, such as rapid urbanization, geographical features, weather conditions, lack of resources, etc. So more targeted research like this needs to be conducted. The results of this research will help the administration to design better, more efficient, and effective waste management techniques and systems.
