Abstract
The non-biodegradable nature of stone waste enhances the worldwide problem of disposal. A lack of land for waste landfills, increased transportation costs, and other related problems have compelled industries to look for alternative solutions. Depletion of natural resources has also been brought about by the construction industry’s excessive use of resources like cement, river sand, and natural aggregates. As a result, the demand for sustainable and commercially feasible alternatives is rising and utilizing the stone waste has emerged as a promising solution to address the environmental issues. According to recent studies, waste from the dimensional stone industry may be effectively recycled into various construction practices. This paper comprehensively reviews the suitability of waste dimensional stone for various construction practices. The utilization of waste from marble, granite and limestone industries in concrete, mortar and asphalt as green composites are thoroughly discussed. It was observed that 5-25 % as supplementary cementitious material and 20-40% replacement of river sand with such waste gives optimum results whereas coarse aggregate can be replaced up to 40% without compromising with performance of construction material. The paper also details the advanced synthesis techniques used to incorporate polymers like reactions into building materials and the subsequent characterization of these composites.
