Abstract
The dynamic response of the building structure is to a large extent dependent on the nature of the supporting soil. Soil stiffness and damping metrics fluctuation can cause significant tension in the behaviour of building skeleton when exposed to dynamic loads such as earthquake or wind. This research aims to evaluate how different soil conditions namely hard, medium, and soft soils impact the seismic performance of building frames under dynamic analysis. The project involves modelling multi storey building frames subjected to dynamic loading, using software Etabs. Soil-structure interaction is incorporated into the models using appropriate foundation modelling technique and free distinct soil types are simulated based on their typical geotechnical properties. Response spectrum analysis is conducted to observers’ variations in structural responses, including lateral displacement, inter stray drift and storey shear. The results suggest that building founded on soft soil exhibits higher displacement and lower natural frequencies compared to those on hard soils, indicating increased vulnerability to seismic excitations. In contrast, hard soils provide better resistance and stability but may also transmit more seismic energy to the structure. The study highlights considering the soil conditions in structural design to ensure safety, performance and resilience of the buildings in seismic prone areas.
