Abstract

Drainage blockage caused by plastic bags, bottles, leaves, sludge, mud, and other solid waste can reduce water flow and contribute to waterlogging, flooding, foul odor and sanitation problems. Conventional manual drain cleaning is labor-intensive and can expose sanitation workers to contaminated water, sharp objects, harmful gases, and other occupational hazards. This project presents an Innovative Solar Powered Drainage Cleaning System that combines renewable solar energy with a mechanically driven waste collection mechanism. The proposed system uses a photovoltaic panel, charge controller, rechargeable battery, DC geared motor, chain-and-sprocket transmission, inclined conveyor/rake mechanism, and detachable waste collection bin. Solar energy is converted into electrical power and stored in the battery; the motor then drives the conveyor so that rake blades collect floating and semi-solid waste and lift it into the collection bin. The design emphasizes compactness, portability, low maintenance, worker safety, and suitability for small to medium open drainage channels. Typical design ranges considered in the project include a 100W solar panel, 12 V battery system, 100 W DC geared motor, and a 30–45° conveyor inclination. The methodology covers problem identification, requirement analysis, concept development, component selection, design, fabrication, electrical assembly, testing, maintenance, and safety. The system is intended to reduce manual intervention and support cleaner and more sustainable drainage maintenance. Future enhancements include sensor- based automation, IoT monitoring, remote control, adjustable conveyor speed, and improved corrosion resistance.
