Abstract
Water is one of the most essential natural resources required for the survival of all living organisms. However, the availability of clean and safe drinking water remains a major challenge in many rural and coastal areas. Conventional water purification methods may require electricity and additional operating costs. Solar energy provides an eco-friendly and sustainable solution for water purification. The Smart Solar Still project aims to purify water using solar energy while monitoring important parameters in real time. The proposed system uses solar heat to evaporate water, leaving behind dissolved salts and many non-volatile impurities. The water vapour is then condensed and collected as purified water. An ESP32 microcontroller is used to monitor and control the system. A DS18B20 temperature sensor measures the temperature, while a float switch detects the water level. A Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) sensor measures the dissolved solids level of the collected water, and an OLED display shows the sensor readings and system status. The system also uses a relay module to control the water pump and heating element according to the programmed conditions. Arduino IDE is used to develop and upload the program to the ESP32 microcontroller. By integrating solar energy, sensors, and automatic control, the Smart Solar Still provides a practical approach to water purification and real-time monitoring. The project aims to offer a sustainable and cost-effective water purification solution, particularly for rural and coastal communities.
