Abstract
The area of biomedical polymer chemistry is one of the most crucial research fields in biomedicine, which can be used for the creation of new biomaterials with improved biocompatibility, function and clinical performance. In the past decade, the synthesis, modification, and nanotechnology of polymers have advanced significantly and today they can be used in many biomedical applications including drug delivery systems, tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, wound healing applications, implantable medical devices, biosensors and diagnostic platforms. In addition to natural polymers like collagen, chitosan, alginate, hyaluronic acid, other synthetic polymers like poly (lactic acid), polycaprolactone, polyethylene glycol, polyurethane and poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) have been discovered to possess interesting properties from the physicochemical and biological point of view for their targeted use in therapeutic applications and personalized medicine. Significant advances have been made in polymer technology over the past few years such as shape-memory materials, injectable hydrogels and polymeric nanocomposites, 3D/4D bioprinting technologies, etc., which offer opportunities for the use of polymer technology in clinical applications. These are all steps that have been taken, but there are still problems to be solved, including biocompatibility, biodegradation control, scaling up production, sterilizing, regulatory approval and cost-effectiveness. The restrictions need to be overcome to make polymer-based technology a routine tool for medical applications. The general aspects of biomedical polymer chemistry, properties and classification of biomedical polymers, major clinical applications of biomedical polymers, recent advancement of biomedical polymer technology, challenges and future biomedical polymer research are summarized.
