Abstract
Astrophysics is a major branch of physical science that applies the principles of physics and mathematics to understand celestial objects, astronomical phenomena, and the Universe as a whole. It encompasses a broad range of subjects, including the formation and evolution of stars, galaxies, planets, black holes, neutron stars, cosmic radiation, gravitational waves, and the large-scale structure of the Universe. Modern astrophysics combines theoretical models with observations obtained across the electromagnetic spectrum and increasingly incorporates information from gravitational waves, neutrinos, and other astronomical messengers. Stellar evolution provides a fundamental framework for understanding how stars form, evolve, and ultimately end their lives as white dwarfs, neutron stars, or black holes, depending primarily on their initial masses and evolutionary histories. At larger scales, observations of galaxies, the cosmic microwave background (CMB), gravitational lensing, and Type Ia supernovae have contributed to the development and testing of the standard cosmological model. Measurements from the Planck mission have provided precise constraints on several cosmological parameters and have shown strong consistency with the spatially flat six-parameter (Lambda)CDM model. This review discusses major concepts and developments in modern astrophysics, with particular emphasis on stellar evolution, compact objects, galaxies, dark matter, dark energy, the cosmic microwave background, gravitational waves, observational methods, and computational approaches. The review also considers major unresolved questions, including the particle nature of dark matter, the physical origin of dark energy, the formation of early supermassive black holes, and the processes governing galaxy evolution. Continued development of astronomical observatories, gravitational-wave detectors, computational simulations, and multi-messenger techniques is expected to provide increasingly detailed information about the physical history and evolution of the Universe.
