Abstract
This paper focus on the substantial effects of fluid property changes and phase change events, this study provides a comprehensive transient assessment of the heat exchanger’s thermal performance and fluid flow behaviour for cooling and dehumidification applications. In response to a step-change perturbation, a dynamic model was created and co-simulated to describe the moist air (shell-side) and the two-phase refrigerant (tube-side), as well as their non-linear interactions. The significant correlation between fluid state and heat exchanger efficiency is evident from the presentation of the transient data as a set of key performance indicators. First, Due to the high NTU and the dominating two-phase Mixture Zone, the heat exchanger produces a modest effectiveness (ϵ≈0.8). When a second step shift occurs at t≈10×10²3s, a significant transient event is precipitated, and the average vapour zone length fraction increases along with the depth-layered liquid zone. The system’s reference state of a more vigorous dehumidification mode is further established by this transition, which results in a lower total NTU and an instantaneous rapid increase in the Rate of Water Condensation. The findings emphasise the significance of forecasting the instantaneous ϵ, which is primarily influenced by the refrigerant flow’s transient distribution (Vapour, Mixture, Liquid) across three zones. For the better cooling capacity and stability when operating with transient loads, these results highlight the need for a variable-property, multi-zone transient model in the design and control of small microtube heat exchangers.
