Abstract

In an era of rapid urban growth—driven by continued population growth and greater waste dispersion due to unregulated disposal practices by all citizens—a major challenge is emerging in the effective management of solid waste in urban environments. This project proposes a solution to this challenge: a Smart Waste Tracking & System for Monitoring. In this system, every household is provided with an RFID card, which they must use each time they deposit waste into the garbage collection vehicle. Households will have their card scanned by the garbage collector before depositing waste. This will allow the centralised system to have accurate records of waste deposition by each household. In addition, several fines and rewards will be associated with that record. For example, any household that fails to deposit waste for 4 days will be fined ₹100, and any household that deposits waste at least once every 30 days will receive an incentive based on the total number of waste deposits. The process of calculating both wet and dry waste begins with the vehicle’s initial weight; after unloading, the second weight is taken and compared to determine the amounts of the two types of waste. The difference between the two will be displayed on remote display devices for real-time readings. The Municipal Web Portal provides a comprehensive record of a citizen’s activities. It allows city officials to view all waste generated by citizens, review trends in individual waste, and gather data on the various components of waste in specific sectors. A user interface for all citizens provides a list of all waste disposed of, reasons for missing a day of disposal, and what is expected of the citizen in maintaining cleanliness. Technology-based methods that utilize this system will ensure greater accountability and promote environmentally responsible waste management.
