The Influence of Dietary Habits on the Nutritional Status of Athletes

Abstract

The influence of dietary habits on the nutritional status of athletes, a sample of 100 athletes, consisting of 50 vegetarians (25 males and 25 females) and 50 non-vegetarians (25 males and 25 females), aged 17–26 years, was selected from Punjabi University Patiala and NIS Patiala. Information was gathered about the athletes’ overall characteristics, anthropometric measures, food consumption, level of physical activity, and physical performance. The information showed that consumption of five food groups – vegetables, grains, pulses, and sugar – was insufficient. On the other hand, more fruits, milk, and dairy products were consumed. Both vegetarian and non-vegetarian athletes of both sexes were found to consume inadequate amounts of energy, protein, fat, and iron, but acceptable amounts of calcium and folic acid. It was discovered that 3% of nonvegetarians and 7% of vegetarians among males had a Body Mass Index (BMI) below 18 kg/m². 25% of nonvegetarians and 35% of vegetarians were underweight among females.
