Abstract

The exceptional properties of Aluminium metal matrix composites (AMMCs) like good hardness, specific strength, enhanced wear rate made huge demand in the automobile and aerospace industries. The classical methods of manufacturing AMMCs leave problems at the interface of matrix and reinforcement segregation, like an agglomeration of reinforcements, wettability etc. To overcome this, an alternate, innovative method of fabricating aluminium matrix surface composites has been invented, which is termed friction stir processing. In this paper friction stir processing attempted to fabricate aluminium matrix surface composites by considering AA7075 as the matrix and multi wall carbon Nano tubes (MWCNT) as the reinforcement particles. The process parameters of FSP such as rotational speed, traverse speed and weight percentage of MWCNT have been varied at three levels and the resulting variables such as wear resistance, grain size and microstructure of the composite focused. Design of experiments planned according to the Taguchi technique for optimizing the response variable wear rate with respect to FSP parameters. It found that the wear resistance has been enhanced to 78.72 % when compared to base metal. The relevant plots obtained pertaining to the experimental data using Minitab -17 software to reiterate and analyse the results accordingly to conclude.
