There is a type of manufacturing paper that struggles to find a home. The work is sound — a machining parameter study, a welding optimisation, a 3D printing material trial — and it came out of a real shop floor or a real lab rig. But it is not a breakthrough, and the big journals want breakthroughs.
The International Journal of Manufacturing and Materials Processing (IJMMP) was built for exactly that work. It is a peer-reviewed, hybrid open access manufacturing journal published since 2015 by STM Journals, and its own scope statement puts it plainly: the journal’s prominence lies in the industrial application and novelty of the research.
Here is what it covers, who runs it, and how to submit.
What IJMMP Covers
The journal takes both traditional and non-traditional manufacturing processes, along with advances in design methodology. It treats the theoretical side of a study as seriously as the practical side, which matters if your contribution is a process improvement rather than a new theory.

Two issues a year makes this a smaller manufacturing journal than most. That cuts both ways: fewer slots, but also a shorter table of contents your paper will not disappear into.

Research Areas
Based on the scope statement and published work, this manufacturing journal covers five broad areas.
Traditional Machining and Process Optimisation
Turning, milling, drilling, grinding. Cutting parameters, tool wear, surface roughness, machinability of difficult materials. Parameter optimisation studies with real measured data are core to the journal.
Non-Traditional and Advanced Machining
EDM, ECM, laser-assisted machining, abrasive processes. Laser-assisted machining of hard-to-cut materials — ceramics, titanium alloys, nickel-based superalloys — has featured directly in recent issues, driven by aerospace demand.
Additive Manufacturing and 3D Printing
Material selection, print parameters, thermal behaviour, post-processing and mechanical characterisation of printed parts. PLA, polymer composites and metal AM all fall in scope.
Materials Processing and Joining
Welding, forming, heat treatment, surface engineering. Process-structure-property relationships, and how a processing route changes what the material can do.
Composites and Advanced Materials
Metal matrix and polymer matrix composites, particularly in aerospace and automotive contexts where weight and strength drive material choice.
Published Work
Three papers that show the journal’s range.
Overview of 3D Printing Technology with Different Materials and Applications — Usmani, Shrivastava and Suresh carry out thermal analysis of a 3D printed model in SOLIDWORKS, then fabricate and assemble the physical frame. Design, simulation and build in one study.
Review on Recent Trends in Laser Assisted Machining of Hard to Cut Materials — Ali and Biradar review laser-assisted machining as a route for ceramics, titanium alloys, nickel-based alloys and composites, materials where conventional machining struggles and aerospace demand keeps growing.
Composites: The Future Generation of Aircraft Materials — Saraiya, Gohil and Deshmukh survey metal matrix and polymer matrix composites in aircraft and space vehicle applications.
Note the mix: an original build-and-test study alongside two reviews. This manufacturing journal takes both, and a well-scoped review of a narrow process area is a realistic submission here.
Indexing and Metrics
IJMMP is indexed in Google Scholar, Index Copernicus, Scientific Literature (SCILIT) and SJIF.
Its Index Copernicus Value was 49.97 in 2022. SJIF has risen steadily across five years:
| Year | SJIF |
|---|---|
| 2020 | 5.846 |
| 2021 | 5.904 |
| 2022 | 5.990 |
| 2023 | 5.998 |
| 2024 | 6.000 |
Be clear about what this means. IJMMP is not indexed in Web of Science or Scopus, and SJIF is not Clarivate’s Journal Impact Factor. If your institution counts only WoS or Scopus publications toward a degree or promotion, check your requirements before submitting — this is the first thing to verify, not the last.
If your aim is a peer-reviewed, DOI-assigned record of applied manufacturing work that is discoverable through Google Scholar, the journal provides that.
Who Runs the Journal
The Editor-in-Chief is Prof. Kondapalli Siva Prasad, Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Anil Neerukonda Institute of Technology and Sciences, Andhra Pradesh.
His own research sits in welding and manufacturing process optimisation, which is directly relevant if your paper involves joining processes, parameter studies or process-property relationships. A manufacturing paper handled by someone who publishes in manufacturing gets a more useful review than one routed to a generalist.
The board consists of practising researchers, and manuscripts are assigned to editors with matching expertise.
How to Submit
Check scope against industrial application. This is the journal’s own stated criterion. A study with no clear path to shop-floor or industrial relevance is a weaker fit here than it would be in a purely academic venue.
Format to the guidelines. The Author Guidelines and Instructions for Authors cover structure, references and figures.
Submit through the portal. Upload your manuscript, abstract, keywords and supplementary files via the manuscript submission system, which provides status tracking and direct contact with the editorial office.
Plan around two issues a year. With a January-June and July-December cycle, submission timing affects when your paper appears. Submitting early in a cycle is generally better.
Check the APC. As a hybrid open access journal, IJMMP charges a processing fee for the open access route. See the Article Processing Charges page.
What Reviewers Will Look For
Manufacturing papers get sent back for a predictable set of reasons.
- Complete process parameters. Cutting speed, feed, depth of cut, tool material and geometry, coolant, machine model. Without these the study cannot be repeated.
- Material fully specified. Grade, composition, supplier, heat treatment condition. “Aluminium alloy” is not a specification; “AA6061-T6” is.
- Measurement method stated. Instrument, resolution, calibration, number of measurement points per specimen.
- Replication, not a single run. How many specimens, how many repeats, and the scatter across them.
- A design of experiments where appropriate. Taguchi, factorial or response surface. One-factor-at-a-time studies over many variables invite criticism.
- Comparison against a baseline. Your optimised parameter set against the conventional one, under matched conditions.
- Industrial relevance addressed explicitly. Cost, cycle time, scalability. This is the journal’s stated priority, so make it easy for the reviewer to see.
- Current references. Manufacturing technology moves; a reference list ending five or six years ago reads as dated.
Conclusion
IJMMP is a small, specialist manufacturing journal. Two issues a year, no Web of Science or Scopus indexing, and a scope deliberately focused on industrial application rather than theoretical novelty. If your institution’s requirements rule out non-WoS venues, that settles it and you should look elsewhere.
What it offers, for the right paper, is a peer-reviewed home with a DOI, a mechanical engineering professor with a manufacturing research background as Editor-in-Chief, and an explicit preference for work that could actually be used. A machining parameter study, a welding optimisation, an additive manufacturing material trial, or a focused review of a narrow process area all fit that description — and all are papers that larger journals often turn away for being too applied or too narrow.
If that sounds like your work, read the author guidelines, run through the checklist above, and submit your manuscript
