Abstract
Road traffic accidents continue to be a major public health and transportation challenge, causing significant loss of life, injuries, and economic damage worldwide. Road infrastructure is one of the most critical factors influencing traffic safety, as well-designed and properly maintained roads can substantially reduce the frequency and severity of accidents. This review paper examines the role of road infrastructure in improving road safety by analyzing existing research on highway geometric design, pavement conditions, traffic signs and road markings, intersections, pedestrian and cyclist facilities, road lighting, and roadside safety barriers. The study also reviews the application of modern technologies, including Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Internet of Things (IoT), and drone-based monitoring, for infrastructure assessment and proactive safety management. These technologies enable real-time traffic monitoring, predictive maintenance, and data-driven decision-making, thereby enhancing transportation efficiency and reducing accident risks. Furthermore, the paper discusses the major challenges associated with inadequate infrastructure maintenance, rapid urbanization, limited financial resources, and inconsistent implementation of road safety standards, particularly in developing countries. Based on the reviewed literature, it is evident that integrating traditional road engineering practices with advanced digital technologies provides a comprehensive approach to improving road infrastructure safety. Regular maintenance, adoption of international design standards, effective traffic management, and investment in smart transportation systems are essential for achieving sustainable and safer road networks. The findings of this review provide valuable insights for transportation engineers, policymakers, and researchers in developing effective infrastructure-based strategies to reduce road accidents and enhance overall transportation safety.
