Abstract

The growth of the wind energy sector has increased the need for enhanced techniques with the goal of improving the efficiency and reliability of wind turbines. As the size of wind turbines increases, there is a noticeable increase in energy loss, problems with fluctuating loads, and structural damage. This suggests that effective techniques need to be implemented in order to improve their efficacy. Methods for flow control, including passive and active flow control techniques, have been shown to be successful in enhancing lift-to-drag ratios, minimizing flow separation, and controlling boundary layer behavior. In the context of wind turbine applications, this review examines the aerodynamic effects associated with various flow control methods. Recent findings indicate that passive flow control devices exhibit simplicity and robustness, while active flow control methods allow adaptive, real-time control under varying wind conditions. This article presents a comprehensive overview of flow control methods for wind turbines, emphasizing their advancement, efficiency, and challenges. This review concludes with significant findings, lift enhancement of various flow control devices and their Technology Readiness Level (TRL), and possible avenues for enhancing aerodynamic efficiency and turbine performance longevity. Optimizing flow control systems, lowering implementation costs, and enhancing their flexibility under challenging operating situations should be the main goals of future study.
