Abstract
Rapid urbanisation has created a situation in which traffic congestion has become one of the major problems affecting many aspects such as, mobility, safety and environmental quality. The solution for traffic management problems is a smart transportation management system (STMS) based on the Internet of Things (IoT) concept. This framework will improve the efficiency of traffic management with real time monitoring and control of traffic. The proposed system will consist of an IoT enabled network of wireless sensors and cameras installed at key intersections to monitor and report on vehicle density, vehicle speed and road conditions. The architecture of an STMS consists of four major components including; sensor hubs, data transmission modules, and control unit for intelligent decision making. Each of these components has an effect on reducing congestion, reducing travel times and increasing safety thus supporting sustainable urban mobility. In this paper we will discuss the design, implementation and performance evaluation of the IoT based smart transportation management system with a demonstration of the potential for reducing congestion, travel time and emissions associated with vehicles, thereby improving traffic efficiency and quality of life in urban areas. By continuously gathering and sending traffic-related data to a centralised monitoring platform, these gadgets help transportation authorities better comprehend shifting traffic patterns and manage congestion. Real-time sensing, wireless connectivity, and cognitive data processing can be integrated to deliver timely information for traffic signal operations optimisation and better use of the current road infrastructure. Real-time traffic data can also help authorities see unusual traffic patterns, roadblocks, and other possible disturbances that could compromise the effectiveness of transportation.
