Abstract

Adsorption is an efficient method for dye removal but the high cost of adsorbents limits its use, emphasizing the need for sustainable, low-cost alternatives. This study explores the usage of modified cotton fabric for the treatment of malachite green (cationic dye) from wastewater. Cellulase extracted from Raphanus sativus and Daucus carota were evaluated for bioscouring potential which was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. Further, cotton fabric was chemically modified using acetic acid, confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Dyeing parameters (pH, liquor ratio, contact time, temperature) was assessed through dye exhaustion. The specific activity of extract from Colocasia esculenta, Raphanus sativus, Daucus carota was 3.61 U/mg and 8.49 U/mg and 6.04 U/mg respectively using carboxymethyl cellulose as a substrate. Samples treated with extracts of Raphanus sativus showed highest glucose release of 1833.3 µg. SEM analysis showed that fabric treated with Daucus carota extract has significant serrated edges. The optimum parameters showed that exhaustion increases with increasing the acetic acid concentration at pH 6, temperature 95 ºC. Percentage exhaustion of dye with optimum parameters is better with anioised fabric i.e. 42.5% (Colocasia esculenta), 28.2% (Raphanus sativus), 25.6% (Daucus carota). Anionised fabrics, especially those treated with Colocasia esculenta, demonstrated improved dye removal efficiency, confirming that fabric anionization is an effective, sustainable approach for cationic dye removal from wastewater.
