Abstract

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Viral hepatitis is the liver disease caused by virus, the knowledge of hepatitis is essential for college students, since the students will be at risk of developing hepatitis due to their lifestyle such as sharing personal items. The aim of the study was to assess the knowledge and evaluate the effectiveness of structured teaching program on knowledge regarding viral hepatitis and its prevention among college students. METHODOLOGY: One hundred and sixty college students were selected from selected college, purposive sampling technique was used for sample selection and a structured questionnaire designed for collecting the data, planned structured teaching administered to improvise the knowledge and data was analyzed using SPSS 18.0 RESULTS: The present study found that the significant difference in the mean knowledge score. The study found that the structured teaching program was effective at 89.52 in bringing improvement in knowledge score of college students on viral hepatitis and its prevention, the study also found significant no association between pretest knowledge with selected age, religion, type of family, family income, previous knowledge on prevention of hepatitis. CONCLUSION: The study concluded that the structured teaching program was effective in improving the knowledge of college students regarding viral hepatitis, and recommended that awareness of hepatitis will modify the health perception and behavior of college student, so that risk of hepatitis is reduced by healthy practice.
