Abstract
This extensive review explores the intricate relationship between carbohydrates and diabetes mellitus, integrating historical perspectives, biochemical foundations, and modern therapeutic approaches. The article delves into the chemistry of carbohydrates, elucidating their structural diversity and metabolic significance in relation to diabetes pathophysiology. It traces the evolution of diabetes, understanding from ancient civilizations to contemporary molecular insights, highlighting pivotal discoveries such as insulin’s identification. They critically examined various forms of diabetes, including Type 1, Type 2, and rarer variants like LADA and MODY, emphasizing their distinct etiologies and clinical presentations. A significant focus is placed on carbohydrate metabolism in diabetic states, exploring concepts such as the glycemic index, carbohydrate counting, and their implications for blood glucose management. Furthermore, the article investigates cutting-edge approaches in diabetes management, including the potential of medicinal plants and their bioactive compounds. It outlines six primary antidiabetic mechanisms, providing a comprehensive framework for understanding current and prospective therapeutic strategies. The review also addresses the complex interplay between lipid metabolism and carbohydrate homeostasis in diabetes, offering insights into the multifaceted nature of metabolic regulation. Another approach can also be employed by means of various phytoconstituents used for the treatment and management of the disease. The major anti-diabetic potential is seen within plants like White Mulberry, Fenugreek, Ceylon cinnamon, and Ginger. This comprehensive analysis synthesizes current knowledge and identifies critical areas for future research, making it an invaluable resource for healthcare professionals, researchers, and individuals seeking a deeper understanding of carbohydrate metabolism in the context of diabetes mellitus.
