Subscription-Based Charges

Last updated: 2022-04-30

Subscription-based charges for online access to academic journals are an essential part of institutional subscriptions. This option is tailored to the specific needs of libraries and institutions that require access to a wide range of scholarly research for their patrons. Online subscriptions are generally more cost-effective than print subscriptions and offer many benefits, such as immediate access to the latest research, ease of use, and advanced search functionality.

Subscription-based access models have been the traditional revenue model for STM publishers. However, in recent years, there has been a growing shift towards open access models, where the content is freely available to readers, and the costs are borne by the author or their institution through article processing charges (APCs).

Despite this shift, many publishers still offer subscription-based access to their journals, alongside open access options. STM determines subscription prices based on several factors:

  • Article Volume
  • Journal Quality
  • Journal Usage
  • Editorial Processes
  • Competitive Considerations
  • STM also considers other revenue streams, such as commercial contributions from advertising, reprints, and supplements, when calculating subscription prices.
Subscription Options and Article Access

STM offers a variety of purchasing options for subscription articles that cater to different individuals and institutions, which includes the following:

  • For Libraries and Institutions: STM offers several subscription options that are customized according to the subscriber's specific situation and reflect various factors. For collection purchases, the considerations include market conditions, competitive factors, the number of archival rights they buy, and agreement-specific factors like currency, agreement length, and payment terms. The collection prices are reviewed annually, and any adjustments are based on factors including market conditions, competitive considerations, the number, quality, and usage of subscription articles published, as well as technical features and platform capabilities. These calculations do not include open-access articles.
  • Individuals: Researchers who are not affiliated with an institution or would like easy access to a title not available from their library can benefit from personal access options. These options include credit card-based transactional article sale and article rental.
Subscription-Based Charge

This charge includes the cost of converting your manuscript into a fully published article and disseminating it to the widest possible audience.

When submitting your article, you will be prompted to pay the subscription-based publication charge through our online payment system. Once payment is received, your article will undergo a thorough review process by our editorial team. If your article is accepted, it will be published in our subscription-based publication and made available to our readers worldwide.

It is important to note that the subscription-based publication charge is a one-time fee and covers all costs associated with publishing your article, including the cost of any necessary revisions and edits. Additionally, the charge includes access to the publication for the duration of your subscription.

  • Author waiver: STM offer waivers or discounts on subscription fees for authors who have published articles in their journals. This is often referred to as an "author discount" or "author waiver."
  • Developing country waiver: STM offer waivers or discounts for authors and institutions located in developing countries. This is in recognition of the fact that institutions in these countries may not have the same financial resources as those in developed countries.
  • Bundled subscription discount: STM offer discounts to institutions that subscribe to multiple publications or journals.

  • The author may also need to provide additional documentation to support their request, such as proof of funding limitations or evidence of financial hardship.
  • STM will typically review the request and documentation and may require additional information or clarification.
  • If the waiver is approved, STM will typically notify the author and provide instructions for submitting the final version of the manuscript for publication.

Reimbursement

Subscription-based charges reimbursement refers to the process of refunding the subscription fee to the subscribers under certain circumstances. The reimbursement policy may vary depending on the subscription-based publication and their terms and conditions. However, in general, subscribers may be eligible for reimbursement if:

  • The publication fails to deliver the subscribed content within the promised timeframe.
  • The subscriber experiences technical issues or problems that prevent them from accessing the content.
  • The subscriber decides to cancel their subscription before the expiration date due to unsatisfactory content or service.
  • The publication stops publishing during the period of the subscription.

In these cases, subscribers may need to provide proof of payment, such as receipts or transaction records, and documentation of the issues they faced. The reimbursement may be full or partial, depending on the circumstances.

It is important for subscribers to review the reimbursement policy and terms and conditions of the subscription-based publication before subscribing. This can help ensure that they are aware of their rights and responsibilities as a subscriber and can make an informed decision about whether to subscribe.

Refunds and Cancellation

Refunds and cancellations are generally not offered for subscription-based charges in STM journals, as subscriptions are considered non-refundable and non-cancelable. However, in the case of any technical issues or unforeseen circumstances, STM may offer refunds or adjustments to subscription fees on a case-by-case basis.

If a subscriber wishes to cancel a subscription, they should contact the publisher as soon as possible to inquire about the possibility of a refund or adjustment to their subscription fees. It is important to note that cancellation may not always result in a refund, and some publishers may have specific policies regarding cancellations and refunds.

In the event that a journal ceases publication during the period of a subscription, subscribers may be offered the option to select another journal at no additional cost or to receive a refund for the remaining issues of the subscription.
