Special Issue Description

A clinical study is a type of research that uses human volunteers (also known as participants) the translation of basic research (conducted in laboratories) into new treatments and information that will benefit patients. It is the method by which we learn to prevent, diagnose, and treat illness. Clinical research encompasses a wide range of scientific investigations. Clinical trials (also known as interventional studies) and observational studies are the two main types of clinical studies. Clinical trials are human research studies that aim to evaluate a medical, surgical, or behavioral intervention. They are the primary means by which researchers determine whether a new treatment, such as a new drug, diet, or medical device (such as a pacemaker), is safe and effective in humans. A clinical trial is frequently used to determine whether a new treatment is more effective and/or has fewer harmful side effects than the standard treatment. Medical products, such as drugs or devices, procedures, or changes in participant behavior, such as diet, are examples of interventions. Clinical trials may compare a new medical approach to an existing standard, to a placebo containing no active ingredients, or to no intervention.
