Special Issue Description

Health economics is the application of economic principles to the field of health care. Economics, in its broadest sense, is concerned with how society allocates its resources among alternative uses. Through the study of health care providers, hospitals and clinics’ managed care, and public health promotion activities, health economics is used to promote healthy lifestyles and positive health outcomes. Health economics seeks to understand the decision-making behavior of individuals, health care providers, public and private organizations, and governments by applying economic theories of consumer, producer, and social choice. Health economic studies inform decision-makers on how to best use available resources to maximize health benefits. Economic evaluation is a subset of health economics that serves as a tool for comparing the costs and outcomes of various interventions. Health economic studies inform decision-makers on how to best use available resources to maximize health benefits. Economic evaluation is a subset of health economics that serves as a tool for comparing the costs and outcomes of various interventions. The most difficult challenge in this evolutionary method is a lack of understanding of current methods by all those involved in the provision and purchase of health care. Different economic evaluation methods have been adopted in some countries for decision-making, most notably to address the issue of public subsidies for the purchase of medicines. There is little evidence on the impact of health insurance on the health and economic well-being of developing-country beneficiaries. Economic theory provides a solid foundation for evaluating palliative daycare services in ways that differ from other types of evaluation and for answering a variety of questions. Health policy and practice is a vast and complicated field. To provide equitable, efficient, and effective health care services, a public health professional must thoroughly understand all health economics topics. One of Community Medicine’s learning objectives is for a public health professional to function as an effective primary-level leader of a health team.
