Special Issue Description

Colonialism is the act of one people or power dominating another people or region, often by establishing colonies and usually to gain economic domination. Colonists may impose their economic system, language, religion, and other cultural practices during the colonization process. The territory is governed by foreign administrators who want to take advantage of the people and resources in the colonized region to further their own goals. It is connected to imperialism but different from it. Although colonization has existed since history, the term is most closely linked with the European colonial era, which began in the 15th century with the establishment of some European powers’ colonial empires. Initially, European colonial nations adopted mercantilist policies intended to boost the domestic economy; as a result, contracts usually forbade the colony from engaging in trade with any other country save the metropole (mother country). But by the middle of the nineteenth century, the British Empire had abandoned mercantilism and trade barriers and had embraced the idea of free trade, with few barriers or tariffs. A settlement project supported by a colonial authority in which most of the settlers do not share the same ethnicity as the ruling power is known as surrogate colonialism. The concept of “internal colonialism” refers to unequal structural power distribution inside a state. The state itself is where exploitation originates. A method in which power and exploitation may be passed from citizens of the colonizing nation to an immigrant population within a newly sovereign nation serves as an example of this.
