Special Issue Description

Building information modeling (BIM) is a process that generates and manages digital representations of places’ physical and functional properties. It is supported by a variety of tools, technologies, and contracts. Building information models (BIMs) are computer files that can be retrieved, traded, or networked to support decision-making regarding a built asset. These files are frequently, but not always, in proprietary formats and contain proprietary data. Those who plan, design, build, run, and maintain buildings and various physical infrastructures, such as water, refuse, electricity, gas, communication utilities, roads, railways, bridges, ports, and tunnels, use BIM software. Although BIM has been an idea since the 1970s, the name didn’t become widely accepted until the early 2000s. Standards creation and BIM acceptance have advanced at varying rates in different nations; standards created in the UK from 2007 onwards served as the foundation for the global standard ISO 19650, which was released in January 2019. Since the 1970s, there has been a BIM notion. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, workstation products like GLIDE, RUCAPS, Sonata, Reflex, and Gable 4D Series as well as Chuck Eastman’s Building Description System were among the first software tools created for modeling buildings. Early software’s high cost, along with the technology required to operate it, prevented widespread adoption. The elements of a BIM model, known as BIM objects, are intelligent, have geometry, and can hold data. BIM software refreshes the model to reflect any changes made to any element. This enables the model to stay consistent and coordinated throughout the whole process, fostering more collaboration between structural engineers, architects, MEP engineers, designers, project managers, and contractors.
