Special Issue Description

New forms of tourism emerged as a result of the significant economic, social, and cultural changes brought about by industrialization around the world; among the rights accorded to workers, free time, holidays, and leisure time emerged, particularly over the twentieth century. The practice of tourism eventually included new social groupings. New cultural artifacts enhanced the range of tourist attractions at the same time, which has continued to this day. The original definition of tourism included some of the current definition’s elements, such as the notion that travelers took “tours” when their expectations were met and they returned to their homes afterward, were predominately motivated by cultural reasons, and paid for their travel expenses out of their home countries. In essence, it was a form of cultural tourism restricted to a particular social group based on their level of education and financial standing. New categories for cultural assets were studied in the late 20th century. In 1992, UNESCO proposed the idea of a cultural landscape, which is the result of the collaboration between man and nature. The Operational Guidelines for the implementation of the World Heritage Convention included the concept of heritage routes in 2005. This implies that “tangible elements whose cultural significance results from exchanges and a multi-dimensional dialogue across countries or regions and that illustrate the interaction of movement, along the route, in space and time” should be taken into consideration.
