Special Issue Description

Architectural conservation is the practice of carefully thought-out interventions that extend the material, historical, and design integrity of man’s constructed heritage. Architecture’s character and integrity, such as shape and style, as well as the materials that make up the structure, such as stone, brick, glass, metal, and wood, are preserved through architectural conservation. The conservationist school of thought known as restoration held that old buildings could be restored using modern materials, designs, and methods, sometimes even to completion. It is extremely similar to modernist architectural ideology in this regard, with the exception that it opposes the demolition of historic structures. Within the realm of architectural conservation and historic preservation, “building restoration” refers to a specific strategy for treatment and a philosophical viewpoint. It places a strong emphasis on the careful repair and upkeep of important properties such as historic sites, homes, monuments, and other buildings to preserve them.
