Special Issue Description

The immune system exists to protect the host from harmful environmental agents, particularly pathogenic organisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites. To combat such a diverse set of threats, the human immune system has evolved to include a plethora of cell types, communicating molecules, and functional responses. The immune system is always active, conducting surveillance, but its activity is increased when a person becomes infected. This increased activity is accompanied by an increase in metabolism, which necessitates the use of energy sources, biosynthesis substrates, and regulatory molecules. The diet ultimately provides these energy sources, substrates, and regulatory molecules. As a result, an adequate supply of a variety of nutrients is required to support the immune system’s optimal function. The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has rapidly spread and has now become a pandemic. Severe COVID-19 is caused by a novel human coronavirus known as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and is characterized by cytokine storm syndromes caused by innate immune activation. Primary immunodeficiency (PID) patients are a unique patient population whose compromised immune system may make them susceptible to severe infections, putting them at greater risk of COVID-19, but it may also result in suppressed inflammatory responses and cytokine storm.

Manuscript Submission information

Manuscripts should be submitted online via the manuscript Engine. Once you register on APID, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline.
All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the email address:[email protected] for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a Double-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for the submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page.
