Special Issue Description

When the body’s natural defense system can’t distinguish between your cells and alien cells, it develops an autoimmune illness and unintentionally attacks healthy cells. Autoimmune illnesses come in more than 80 different varieties and affect many different body parts. Autoimmune medications like Prednisone, methylprednisolone, dexamethasone · Colchicine · Hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) · Sulfasalazine, which frequently have dose-dependent side effects, must be used over an extended period to treat inflammatory illnesses. Several devices have been released on the market or are in development over the years as a result of extensive research on local drug delivery methods to decrease their off-target negative effects and treatment frequency. There are still many obstacles to overcome, and some uses for drug delivery technologies are underutilized. This review highlights local drug delivery methods in several inflammatory illnesses, including applications with untapped potential and targets that are well-known to drug delivery scientists (such as joints, eyes, and teeth) (e.g., sinus, bladder, and colon).
