Pharmacognosy of Dracaena trifasciata

Special Issue Description

Traditional medicine system of India comprises varieties of plants which are played a significant role in curing diseases since ancient times. Among them, Dracaena trifasciata is a species of flowering plant in the family Asparagaceae, native to tropical West Africa from Nigeria east to the Congo. It is most commonly known as the snake plant, Saint George’s sword, mother-in-law’s tongue, and viper’s bowstring hemp, among other names. Until 2017, it was known under the synonym Sansevieria trifasciata. in curing fever, rheumatism, skin diseases, abdominal disorders, snake bite, and obesity, and helps to regulate blood sugar levels. The plant constituents have been reported for possessing antimicrobial, antioxidant, antiulcer, anti-inflammatory, hypolipidemic, hepatoprotective, and hypoglycemic properties. This review provides a bird’s eye view of geographical distribution, physicochemical parameters, phytoconstituents, and pharmacological properties of Dracaena trifasciata.
