Special Issue Description

Numerous hormones control a variety of bodily processes, including electrolyte balance, growth and development, metabolism, and reproduction. The body’s many glands all create hormones. A variety of releasing and inhibiting hormones from the brain work on the pituitary gland to promote the production of pituitary hormones. Some of the pituitary hormones influence other glands spread throughout the body, while others affect the target organs directly. The gonads (i.e., the ovaries and testicles), create sex hormones, the thyroid, which produces thyroid hormone, the parathyroid, which makes the parathyroid hormone, and the pancreas, which produces insulin and glucagon, are additional glands throughout the body that produce hormones. Many of these hormones are components of regulatory hormonal cascades that also include hormones from the hypothalamus, the pituitary, and one or more target glands.
