Special Issue Description

A specialized area of medicine called clinical radiology takes pictures of the inside of the body using cutting-edge technology and a variety of imaging procedures. Over the past three decades, dentistry as a whole has made enormous strides. Since the invention of x-rays, dental radiography has relied on traditional radiographic methods. With the advancement of electronic technology, tools have been developed to produce radiographic images in digital format. These developments have made it essential to have more accurate diagnostic tools, particularly imaging techniques. Modern dentistry has adapted advanced imaging methods including computed tomography, cone beam computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and ultrasound from the straightforward intra-oral periapical X-rays. The transition from analog to digital radiography has sped up and simplified the procedure while also facilitating image storage, manipulation (image cropping, brightness/contrast adjustments, etc.), and retrieval. Complex craniofacial features are now easier to examine and can now be diagnosed with deep-seated lesions more quickly and accurately thanks to three-dimensional imaging. Digital imaging methods in two and three dimensions have been created for dentomaxillofacial diagnosis, treatment planning, and several other therapeutic uses. Digital intraoral imaging, digital panoramic and cephalometric imaging, and cone-beam computed tomography are among these modalities. Furthermore, ionizing radiation visualization techniques also continue to be the best for imaging oral and alveolar tissues since they are based on the attenuation of X-rays by dense objects. Currently, intraoral radiographs (periapical, bitewing, and occlusal), panoramic radiographs, cephalometric radiographs (lateral, posteroanterior, axial—submental-vertex), and cross-sectional images of, for instance, TMJs are all radiographic techniques that can be used to image teeth and tooth-bearing structures. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) has rendered several obsolete radiography methods. Despite being taken very often, dental radiographs cannot be categorized as “routine” or “survey” radiographs. Every X-ray exposure, even when carried out with a minimal amount of ionizing radiation, needs to be justified, optimized, and the information obtained adequately evaluated. A dental radiograph and CBCT volumes should be taken correctly, and a dentist should be able to distinguish between normal anatomic landmarks and abnormal ones. They should also be able to analyze radiographic images.This issue is accepting articles on recent developments in imaging technologies and how they are used in various dental specialties.
