Special Issue Description

Toxicogenomics combines classical toxicology with transcript, protein, and metabolite studies to investigate how genes and environmental stress interact to create disease. Numerous toxicants’ mechanisms of action and mechanisms of disease causation have been identified by the patterns of altered molecular expression brought on by certain exposures or illness consequences. To understand the role of gene-environment interactions in disease, toxicogenomics combines genetics, the analysis of genome-scale mRNA expression (transcriptomics), cell and tissue-wide protein expression (proteomics), metabolite profiling (metabolomics and metabonomics), and bioinformatics with traditional toxicology. You might think of gene, protein, and metabolite-expression profiles as “snapshots” of a molecular landscape that is now incompletely mapped. To fully map this environment and establish a systems toxicology are the ultimate goals of toxicogenomics. The study of all toxicological interactions within a biological system is known as systems toxicology. Systems toxicology, like systems biology, makes an effort to define the behavior and interactions of every component of a biological system on the assumption that global-molecular data can be combined and computationally simulated. Systems toxicology must collect data from molecular expression and toxicology tests and translate them into an understanding of the toxicological reactions of cells and organisms under stress. The creation of knowledgebases that enables the fusion of data from various fields as well as computational modeling will be used to achieve this. Several molecular signatures of drug and chemical exposure have been identified through toxicogenomics experiments, as have expression patterns associated with different histopathologies and diseases. However, much more work needs to be done to characterize the toxicity response of many target organs and predict disease outcomes following toxicant exposures. The goal of toxicogenomics is to use genomic resources to identify potential environmental and human toxins as well as their presumed modes of action. One such tool is DNA microarrays, sometimes known as “chips,” which enable the simultaneous monitoring of the expression levels of thousands of genes. This special issue focuses on collecting articles on techniques used in toxicogenomics and its aim and scope in the field of medical sciences.
