Abstract

nUrban environments are increasingly reliant on complex underground infrastructure networks, with manholes serving as critical access points for maintenance, inspection, and drainage. However, traditional manhole monitoring methods, often manual and labour-intensive, can be inefficient and prone to human error. This can lead to serious safety and health hazards, such as accidents caused by open manholes, exposure to harmful gas leaks, and infrastructure damage from overflows due to undetected blockage This paper proposes a novel smart manhole monitoring system that leverages the power of Internet of Things (IoT) technology and sensor fusion to address these challenges. By integrating tilt sensors, gas sensors, and water level sensors, the system provides real-time monitoring of manhole cover status, gas levels, and water accumulation. This data is then wirelessly transmitted to a central monitoring facility, enabling authorities to take prompt action in case of anomalies. This innovative solution has the potential to revolutionize urban infrastructure management. By automating and centralizing manhole monitoring, the system can significantly improve public safety by reducing the risk of accidents and gas exposure. Additionally, real-time data on water levels can help prevent overflows and associated infrastructure damage, promoting public health and environmental well-being. Furthermore, the system can optimize maintenance efforts by enabling targeted interventions based on sensor data, leading to improved efficiency and cost savings for city authorities. This shift towards a data-driven approach to manhole monitoring paves the way for smarter and more sustainable cities, fostering a safer and healthier urban environment for all residents.
