Abstract

nPeripheral venous canulation is the common nursing procedure carried out which cause soreness to the recipient. Previous experience of peripheral venous cannulation may result in negligence or delay in need of medical care. Valsalva Maneuver is a non-pharmacological and cost- effective method to decrease intensity of pain during peripheral venous cannulation. Aim: To assess the effect of Valsalva Maneuver prior to cannulation on pain among patients undergoing peripheral venous cannulation. Methodology: An experimental study, posttest only control group design was used to assess the effect of Valsalva Maneuver prior to cannulation on pain among patients undergoing peripheral venous cannulation. Total 30 patients were drawn from the target population by using random sampling technique and then allocation of subjects was done into control group (n1= 15) and experimental group (n2= 15) by lottery method. Results: The present study findings revealed after 5 minutes of peripheral venous cannulation majority of patients 73.3% among control group reported mild pain and remaining 26.7% patients reported no pain with a mean pain score of 1.06 ± 0.79. Among experimental group majority of patients 73.3% reported no pain whereas only 26.7% patients reported mild pain after 5 minutes of peripheral venous cannulation with mean pain score of 0.26 ± 0.45. Conclusion: The study concluded that Valsalva Maneuver found to be an effective nursing intervention in reducing pain among patient receiving peripheral venous cannulation.
