Abstract

Iron deficiency anaemia represents a medical condition characterised by a reduction in the concentration of haemoglobin in the bloodstream below a defined level, according to the World Health Organization. The condition presents itself in two forms: functional IDA and absolute IDA. The former is characterized by normal or elevated total body iron stores, but insufficient iron supply to the bone marrow. At the same time, the latter occurs when total body iron stores are depleted or exhausted. Anemia is widespread among various demographic groups, such as preschool-aged children, pregnant women, and non-pregnant women. Developing countries are particularly affected due to insufficient nutrition and inadequate health facilities. Prompt detection and management of anemia are vital in averting enduring health implications and enhancing overall well-being. A variety of herbal formulations, as well as single and compound drugs, are available for the treatment of iron deficiency anaemia. This article presents a comprehensive discussion on iron deficiency anaemia, encompassing its prevalence, risk factors, clinical manifestations, and treatment modalities. The review aims to provide a thorough and informative overview of the condition, highlighting crucial aspects that are relevant to the medical field. By examining the latest research findings and clinical data, this article offers valuable insights into the diagnosis and management of iron deficiency anaemia, making it a valuable resource for healthcare professionals and researchers. Iron deficiency anaemia, characterized by low haemoglobin levels, has two forms: functional and absolute. It affects diverse groups, particularly in developing countries, emphasizing the need for early detection and varied treatment options.

Keywords: IDA, incidence, diagnosis, treatment, herbal medicine.
