Abstract

GIS has been employed for integration of both spatial and non-spatial data. It can be applied to any service that is dependent on network like water and power supplies, sewage and transportation. This study was done in Gulu municipality to address the problem of poor solid waste disposal management. It proposes a shortest route identification model to minimize travel distance and reduce collection time by the trucks. The constraints that were considered involved road intersections and the speed of the trucks. Route analysis, testing and validation were performed with the help of GPS device – to pick waypoints for collection points and generation of maps. The network analysis was then carried out to identify the best shortest routes from collection points to the identified damping site using available roads network data. A proposed future work could be the design of a mobile-based platform for notification of responsible authorities.
