Abstract

India is a developing country, more than 50% of Indian population lives in unreinforced masonry structures. Masonry structures are vulnerable to seismic loading and load acting in it’s out of plane, hence performs poorly and sometimes leads to sudden collapse. Collapse of structure not only damages public property but also costs the lives of people. Base isolation techniques for these types of structure can be proven to be beneficial, in case of seismic forces it will lead to a performance objective for masonry structures.
The objective of this study is to identify the behaviour and failure mechanism of masonry structure under lateral forces due to earthquake, to develop a simple base isolation system for it and to study the effectiveness of the base isolation system. Four different shape structures are considered for study namely square, rectangular, C and E shape. Both the fixed base and base isolated models are prepared for analysis purposes in SAP2000 software. Two different types of isolators are taken for the base isolation namely lead rubber bearing and marble-marble material interface as friction isolator. The equivalent stiffness links of these isolators are provided at four corners of each structure. Time history analysis is performed in SAP2000 on all the eight models and results are obtained. It is observed that there is reduction in forces and seismic response in case of base isolated structure. It is observed that the base isolation system is very effective in reducing the seismic response of masonry structures.
