Abstract

The Unani system of medicine is one of the oldest medicine systems serving humanity till today, and that in itself is proof of the correctness of its principles. Acient living people and their disease management was possible because of these traditional medicine systems and Unani being one of these. As each science has its own basis and goals, so odes Unani science. Like all other sciences, its progress also requires the continuous search for new knowledge through research and development. Research and development is also essential for Unani system of medicine. In this field, we are lacking and is one of the reason that our system is not flourishing as it should be. The Unani system has a glorious past and is the mother of almost all existing medical sciences. However, the current scenario is an evidence-based era. Therefore, Unani medicine needs to prove itself scientifically. Summarizing the needs in research are to make our system compared to other system of modern health care, prove the effectiveness of already mentioned drugs in various diseases. If we can provide evidence of the effectiveness of medicines and explain our concepts, we can make the Unani system on par with modern medical systems. New drug development, to compare the effect of drugs, forms, doses and positive and negative interactions with other drugs and last not the least, to face the challenges of new research ideologies. Thus there is a need of research in this field to make it a competitive one among different health sciences.
