Abstract

Everyone should lead a conscious lifestyle that prevents disease as, individual lifestyle is central to the development of chronic diseases. Living healthy lifestyle means taking responsibility for own health and well-being, it is the best step forward in our destiny and the advancement of humankind. Among the diseases CAD has become an epidemic and chronic increasing number of deaths among the younger age group affecting the productivity of economy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of Self-instructional Module (SIM) on knowledge regarding lifestyle modification to maintain heart healthy in cardiac patients. A quantitative, pre-experimental, one group pretest posttest design was selected for the study. The participants were 60 cardiac patients from selected hospitals in Madurai. A non-probability random sampling technique was used to select the samples for the study. A structured knowledge questionnaire was used to collect data from the participants. Data were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. In the pretest 63.33% of the respondents had inadequate knowledge, 36.67% had moderately adequate knowledge. In the posttest 96.67% respondents had adequate knowledge. The ’t’ test value was 46.38 which was found to be significant (p < 0.01). SIM was found to be effective in imparting knowledge to maintain heart healthy in cardiac patients.
