Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) are transforming modern agriculture by enabling data-driven, resource-efficient, and climate-resilient farming practices. This review critically examines recent advances in AI-IoT integration across crop production, irrigation management, pest and disease surveillance, and supply chain optimization through an analysis of published literature and documented case studies. The review indicates that AI-assisted predictive analytics combined with IoT-based real-time sensing significantly improves decision-making in precision agriculture. Across the reviewed studies, AI-IoT technologies enhanced water-use efficiency by 30–40%, reduced fertilizer application by up to 25%, and increased crop productivity by 15–20%. Case studies from India, Kenya, Malawi, and other developing agricultural regions demonstrate successful implementation in banana, wheat, maize, potato, and horticultural production systems, where smart irrigation, disease detection, yield prediction, and automated advisory platforms improved farm efficiency while reducing environmental impacts. The findings further reveal that these technologies are particularly beneficial for precision farming, horticulture, cereal crop cultivation, and smallholder farming systems, supporting sustainable resource management under changing climatic conditions. However, widespread adoption remains constrained by high implementation costs, limited digital infrastructure, inadequate technical expertise, and concerns regarding data security, particularly in developing countries. The review highlights the need for affordable AI-IoT solutions, farmer capacity-building, improved rural connectivity, and supportive policies to accelerate technology adoption. Overall, the evidence demonstrates that the integration of AI and IoT has substantial potential to enhance agricultural productivity, optimize resource utilization, strengthen food security, and promote environmentally sustainable farming, making these technologies key drivers of future climate-smart agriculture.
