About the Journal

International Journal of Membranes is a peer-reviewed online journal, launched in 2024, that publishes research on membrane science and technology. It covers membrane materials, fabrication, processes, characterization, and modeling, and their applications in water, energy, industry, and medicine.

Focus & Scope

  • Membrane Materials: Polymeric, ceramic, and metallic membranes, thin-film and composite membranes, mixed-matrix and nanostructured membranes, graphene and carbon-based membranes, zeolite membranes, biopolymer membranes, ion exchange membranes, hydrophilic and hydrophobic membranes.
  • Membrane Fabrication and Modification: Phase inversion, interfacial polymerization, electrospinning, sol-gel processing and sintering, hydrothermal zeolite growth, layer-by-layer assembly, surface functionalization, antifouling coatings, scale-up and manufacturing reproducibility.
  • Membrane Processes: Microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, reverse and forward osmosis, gas separation and vapor permeation, dialysis, electrodialysis, membrane distillation, pervaporation, membrane crystallization, membrane contactors, membrane extraction, membrane adsorption and chromatography, membrane bioreactors.
  • Membrane Characterization: Morphology and structure, thickness and surface area, pore size and pore size distribution, surface charge, hydrophobicity, permeability, selectivity, flux, microscopy, spectroscopy, and imaging, mechanical, thermal, and chemical stability, service life.
  • Fouling, Cleaning, and Operation: Fouling mechanisms and prediction, scaling and biofouling, antifouling strategies, cleaning protocols, chemical compatibility, performance monitoring, energy demand and operating cost.
  • Membrane Applications: Water and wastewater treatment and reuse in municipal and industrial settings, seawater and brackish water desalination, food processing, biotechnology, pharmaceutical production, protein purification, virus removal, carbon dioxide capture, air purification, membrane reactors, fuel cells, batteries, blood filtration including hemodialysis and plasma separation, artificial organs, drug delivery.
  • Modeling, Simulation, and Design: Membrane transport models, mass and heat transfer modeling, computational fluid dynamics, finite element analysis, molecular dynamics simulation, kinetic and reaction engineering models, multiscale and multiphysics modeling, model validation and optimization, sensitivity and uncertainty analysis, optimization algorithms, performance prediction, machine learning and artificial intelligence, module, spacer, process, and system design.
  • Sustainability and Resource Recovery: Life cycle assessment of membrane systems, energy efficiency, membrane end-of-life and recycling, resource and nutrient recovery.

The journal publishes original research articles, reviews, and communications that report novel and significant findings. Studies of biological membranes solely for cell biology or physiology are out of scope, but biomimetic and cell-derived membranes used in separation, drug delivery, or artificial organs are welcome. The journal serves researchers, academics, engineers, and students in membrane science and technology, along with professionals in water treatment, chemical processing, and pharmaceuticals.
