Special Issue Description
Biotechnology is regarded as one of the most important high-technology sectors in the future. It is now widely acknowledged that small, innovative businesses were the primary drivers of the development of this emerging industry. Many studies on new biotechnology entrepreneurs focus primarily on the situation in the United States, leaving out developments in other countries. As a result, the current paper focuses on two latecomers to the biotechnology industry, namely Japan and Germany, and examines how different institutional frameworks may influence its emergence. We look specifically at the role of venture capital, government initiatives, large corporations, and entrepreneurship in the development and current state of the biotechnology industry.
For international companies seeking to meet today's energy, food, and environmental needs without jeopardizing the Earth's resources or future, sustainable development is no small task. Biotechnology is the innovative solution that these corporate leaders are turning to, whether it is to increase agricultural productivity, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, develop an innovative disease therapy, or reduce pesticide use. BIO and its member companies are not surprised that biotechnology is providing the foundation for a sustainable future. For years, many have emphasized the importance of biotechnology in ensuring a sustainable future.
