    The earth's crust contains several naturally occurring heavy metals that are used for a variety of industrial and commercial purposes. A number of these heavy metals affect the human body, either directly or indirectly. Some of these heavy metals, including copper, cobalt, iron, nickel, magnesium, molybdenum, chromium, selenium, manganese, and zinc, have functional functions that are crucial for a variety of physiological and biochemical processes in the body. While others, including cadmium, mercury, lead, chromium, silver, and arsenic, have dramatic effects on the body and cause acute and chronic toxicities in people, some of these heavy metals can be hazardous to the body in high concentrations. Further, global public health is also at risk from exposure to some toxic chemicals like pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and perfluorooctanoic acids (PFOAs), which are linked to several diseases and harm social activities and economic growth.

    Through a variety of exposure pathways, such as oral, dermal, and occupational exposure, people can be exposed to combinations of chemical and metal poisons simultaneously and/or sequentially. By interfering with the endocrine system, breaking DNA, harming tissues, and activating or inactivating genes, exposure to these chemicals and metals has been linked to several diseases, including cancers. Additionally, exposure to hazardous substances at work and in the environment increases the global burden of disease, which annually results in 90 million years of disability-adjusted life expectancy (DALYs) and nearly 5 million fatalities. However, the quantification of exposure dose (e.g., duration, frequency, model, and intensity), the effects of chemical and metal mixtures (e.g., additive, synergistic, or antagonistic), and the toxicological interactions of toxic chemicals are currently limiting the health risk assessment of cumulative exposure to toxic chemicals and heavy metals.

    To more accurately assess, monitor, and mitigate health risks brought on by exposures to chemical toxins and molecular mechanisms of heavy metal intoxication, which involve attaching to proteins and enzymes, changing their function, and inflicting harm, this special issue intends to compile research papers as well as critical reviews that address concerns relating to chemical toxicology, public health and described how heavy metals cause neurotoxicity, create free radicals that encourage oxidative stress, and damage lipids, proteins, and DNA molecules, and how these free radicals promote carcinogenesis. The harmful health impacts of these heavy metals are explained along with their mechanisms.
