Special Issue Description

A medical laboratory, also known as a clinical laboratory, is a laboratory where tests are performed on clinical specimens to obtain information about a patient’s health to aid in disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. Clinical medical laboratories are examples of applied science, as opposed to basic science research laboratories found in some academic institutions. Although laboratory testing is one of the most widely used diagnostic interventions to support medical decisions, evidence demonstrating its value and impact on health outcomes is limited. This contributes to wide variations in test utilization, including underdiagnosis, overdiagnosis, and misdiagnosis, which can have an impact on quality, clinical- and cost-effectiveness, and patient safety. As a result, incorporating evidence into patient care is a moral and social imperative for laboratory professionals and all health care personnel. Laboratory tests are only valuable if they are clinically valid, which means they provide highly accurate diagnostic or prognostic information for clinical decision making; clinically effective, which means they contribute to improved patient-centered outcomes; and cost-effective, which means they contribute to lower health care costs.
