Abstract
The presence of labor pain is a factor that can worry pregnant mothers in many ways and even lead them to unconventional solutions. Pain during childbirth is one of the factors that makes the mother feel tired and can prevent her from giving birth in the future. In addition, the fear of labor increases the mother’s stress and anxiety and ultimately leads to oxygen demand through hyperventilation. Therefore, labor pain must be treated, and various treatment methods have been tried in this regard. On the other hand, labor pain cannot be treated in all mothers and in all cases. In this context, many mothers and health workers have sought alternative medical methods to treat labor pain. Common non-pharmacological methods to relieve labor pain include strategies, such as relaxation, tactile stimulation, psychological stimulation, and breathing techniques. The analgesic effect of these methods is explained by the gate control theory and the endorphin theory, in which anxiety and fear are reduced and pain control and well-being during childbirth improve. Because non-pharmacological pain relief methods have received little attention in the literature and are generally not available to women in the labor ward, this article reviews the most common complementary treatment methods regarding non-pharmacological approaches to the treatment of labor pain.
